HEIDEN ORTHOPAEDICS ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF
“HEIDEN ORTHOPAEDICS SPORT AND HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP”
Two students selected for inaugural scholarship
Park City, UT— Heiden Orthopaedics is pleased to announce the selection of not one, but two recipients of the first annual “Heiden Orthopaedics Sport and Health Science Scholarship.”
Park City High School seniors Matthew Wolbach and Samantha Crouch were each selected to receive the scholarship, which includes $500 towards college tuition, as well as an experiential component, accompanying five-time Olympic gold medalist and orthopedic surgeon Eric Heiden in his role as team physician for the U.S. Speedskating team, to the Speedskating World Cup at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah in December.
On October 24, NSLI-Y Russia Academic Year 2010-2011 Kazan participants and local FLEX alumni collaborated with their partners from Kazan’s American Center to provide a fun and educational event for children at one of Kazan’s orphanages. Funding for supplies and prizes for the event was made possible by a USAID grant recently awarded to the American Center. The event focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle by being physically active. After numerous planning sessions at the American Center, the NSLI-Y/FLEX/American Center team was ready to engage the children of the orphanage in the name of sports, healthy living, and cultural exchange.
The event began early Sunday morning, with a PowerPoint presentation covering sports that are popular in both Russia and the United States. Well-known sports such as hockey, ice-skating, basketball, and soccer were presented, but less common sports – snowboarding, surfing, and cross-country running – were also highlighted. Activities that the children themselves can take part in at the orphanage, such as jump-roping, hula-hooping, and jogging were also included. The presentation was followed by a sports trivia challenge, complete with prizes including soccer balls, basketballs, hula-hoops, jump ropes, chess sets, Frisbees, and a mini-bowling set.
Summer has come to a close here in Texas and we are just starting to see hints of winter. That’s not the case for the northern US, the frost has already arrived and that means our favorite winter activities are just around the corner.

For those that are looking forward to months of snowboarding, skiing, skating, or snowmobiling it’s important to know how to take care of your back while enjoying the snow. As we’ve said, exercise is a great way to keep your body healthy and limber, but some winter sports can be especially hard on your back. So before you decide to take part in any snow sports check with your doctor first.
Gatorade is thirst-aid! Many people prefer sports drinks to water because they taste better and it’s easier to drink them more often in a sports nutrition diet.
If the sports drink contains a small amount of carbohydrate, sodium, and potassium, the drink will effectively hydrate the person. The following facts are important to consider when using a sports drink for sports nutrition:
- Sports drinks should contain between 14 and 19 grams of
carbohydrate per eight-ounce serving (six to eight percent). A drink with more than ten percent carbohydrate may cause slow absorption, nausea, cramps, or diarrhea. A drink with five percent or less sugar solution may not provide enough additional sports nutrition energy to increase exercise length.
Sugary Sports Drinks Mistakenly Associated With Being Healthy, Say Researchers
ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2010) — Children who practice healthy lifestyle habits such as eating fruits and vegetables and engaging in physical activity may be negatively impacting their health because they tend to consume large amounts of flavored and sports beverages containing sugar, according to research at The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).
“Children and parents associate these drinks with a healthy lifestyle despite their increased amount of sugar and lack of nutritional value,” said Nalini Ranjit, Ph.D., principal investigator and assistant professor of behavioral sciences at the UTHealth School of Public Health. The study will be published in the October issue of Pediatrics.
Researchers examined the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, unhealthy and healthy foods and physical activity levels of 8th and 11thgrade Texas students to determine the relationship between beverage consumption and other behaviors. Sugar-sweetened beverages are drinks that contain added caloric sweeteners such as sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, including a large variety of carbonated and noncarbonated drinks but excluding 100 percent fruit juice.

Are your kids active or participating in an organized sport? Do you happen to have a 24-pack sports drink sitting in your pantry? If you answered yes then you may have been duped. A new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows that teens often perceive sports drinks as part of a healthy lifestyle despite the high sugar content of the beverage.
Dr. Ranjit and colleagues at the University of Texas School of Public Health asked 15,000 teenagers about their eating and exercise habits and their beverage consumption. Of the teenagers surveyed, 22% of the boys and 17% of the girls were obese. One-in-four (28%) teenager reported consuming three or more sugar-sweetened beverages (that included sports and fruit-flavoured drinks) on a daily basis.
