February 1 marks the beginning of National Pet Dental Health Month. More than just a cosmetic issue, bad breath and yellow teeth can be a sign of serious disease in our pets, which may affect their kidneys, livers, and hearts. Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets, and 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society.
Jason and Ashley Cantin appreciate the little things in life. The couple, who married on St. Patrick’s Day in 2007 after dating for six years, is ecstatic when they relax on the couch with their two infant daughters, or gather around the dining room table for a meal. For the Cantins, every moment together is a cause for celebration after an odyssey that saw their youngest child overcome the odds after a battle for her life that doctors were certain she wouldn’t win.
The Cantins knew they wanted to have children, but they differed on the preferred number. Ashley, who is 27, envisioned six. Jason, who is 37, wished for one. Eleanor, their first daughter, was born the day after Christmas in 2008. Though Eleanor was healthy – weighing 9 pounds and 12 ounces – she was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit for two days as a precaution since Ashley was running a high fever.
“We remember looking in the observation room and seeing Eleanor, who was healthy and was a normal size, and then seeing the other babies nearby who were so tiny because they were born premature,” Jason Cantin said. “We felt so much sympathy for the parents of those premature babies because they looked so worried and understandably saddened.”
Once you discover you are pregnant you are bombarded by family, media and yourself to go out and purchase all the things you think you NEED. As a first-time parent this can be extremely overwhelming and not really sure what to buy. We may do research ourselves, or just go about with what our family and friends and mother’s before us have done.
There is one piece of information that nobody shared with me that I want to share with all of you. That is….what is that babies do most of?….You guessed it, POOP and SLEEP! That is what baby’s do. So, in my mind I would think those would be two areas to focus on as a new parent. In Northern Ontario we are limited to places to get products that address the POOP and SLEEP factor of these wonderful bundles of joy. However, my goal with Bugaboo Baby & You is to make it easier for first time parents to address the Poop and Sleep factor:)
Danielle Arnold-McKenny, a mom of five and breastfeeding advocate, was shocked to discover that Health Canada was allowing less than a month for members of the public to comment on its new draft version of Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants: the document that establishes breastfeeding policy in this country.
“That meant that any breastfeeding groups that met monthly would not have enough time to read, review, and submit their comments on the draft. And there would be very little time to organize a group to review the draft in depth,” she says.
“Consultation is meaningless if there is no time to respond,” adds Jodine Chase, a member of the Breastfeeding Action Committee of Edmonton.
As we are discovering everyday the consequences of the choices we have made in the past related to our health, such as the overuse of antibiotics in children or toxic cleaning products in our homes, scientists are revealing more studies that prove how much better using cloth diapers is for baby’s health instead of using disposable diapers.
Information provided by the Environment Canada website (http://www.ec.gc.ca/EnviroZine/english/issues/45/any_questions_e.cfm) reveals that the waste of disposable diapers in our landfills may become a place of reproduction for virus such as Hepatitis B and Polio due to the vaccines given to newborns.

Are you preparing for a baby? Make sure you are REALLY, prepared.
It seems as soon as we find out we are expecting and some even sooner than that we start “preparing for baby”. The first thing we should do is take vitamins to ensure proper nutrition for the baby growing inside us. We start decorating a nursery, thinking of names, have baby showers, etc…. The next nine months go by so fast. We have thought of and prepared for everything that could possibly happen. There are baby gates, cabinet locks, child proof for outlets, car seats and a host of other safety products.
Hello everyone – here is an article that I came across on www.americanbaby.com which I thought may be of interest to you.
Health Update: Baby Bottle Buzz — Toxic or Not?
By Lauren Wiener From: Parents.com
Why Baby Bottles May Be Unsafe
Your baby’s bottles may not be as safe as they seem. According to a new report from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, certain types of plastic bottles contain a potentially dangerous chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to a number of health conditions in animals, including early onset of puberty, increased diabetes risk, hyperactivity, and certain cancers. Because of these findings, the Canadian government has banned all baby bottles made with BPA. Freaked out a little? So were we. Because it can be downright scary and confusing to digest these health risks (especially amid conflicting statements from the plastics industry), we tapped expert researchers to understand the real deal. Here, answers to your major concerns:
The family of an individual to join a new exciting, but also increases responsibilities, however. Mom and dad should pay attention to the health of the baby.
Symptoms of high fever in babies can be scary for parents. Firing is not an inconvenience. Just showing your baby to have spent a cold or viral infection symptom. In addition, babies also fired as a reaction to the vaccine.
According to a report, nearly 1,70,000 women in USA die due to smoking and smoking related diseases. The decline in the smoking rates started in the 1950s and 60s but this trend stalled in the 1990s and there was a steep rise in smoking among teenage girls. The consequences of smoking among women especially among pregnant women have been tremendous. They are discussed in detail below:
1) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Women who smoke during pregnancy expose their babies to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome as these babies are more likely to die from the harmful effects of smoking.
2) Stillbirth: Women who smoke during pregnancy increase the chances of the death of their babies during pregnancy itself.
3) Low birth weight of the baby: Birth weight of the baby is an important factor for the future health of the baby. Low birth weight can lead to a great many complications. In fact, low birth weight is the main reason for pre-natal death (during the first month after the birth).
